IRS Phone Scam!

Posted by Snow2 CPA Posted on Nov 05 2014

We have been hearing from clients that they have been receiving phone calls from the IRS. There are a group of people making fraudulent phone calls pretending to be IRS agents. They may say you have a refund coming; or they may even threaten you with imprisonment!  Any phone call from the IRS is FAKE. The IRS will NEVER call you and will never email you. The IRS will only correspond through the U.S mail.

If you get a call from someone pretending to be an IRS agent, just hang up the phone. Under no circumstance should you ever give someone your personal information. We are always available to answer any questions or concerns you have about these calls.

In light of these recent incidents we have put together a couple of tips to protect your personal information from scammers.

Tips:

Never give out your social security number or any other piece of personal information over the phone, email or website that you haven’t verified to be a legitimate source.

Don’t be afraid to be paranoid! There are people everywhere looking for a way to get your personal information. If something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t no matter how simple it may be.

Never click a link in a strange email. Did you get an email with a link from someone you don’t know? Did you get an email from the IRS or any other “official” looking office and you didn’t request or hear from them previously? Do not click that link! The IRS does not email anyone.

Question everything! The safest way to protect your information is a little critical thinking. Don’t panic, and ask would the IRS really have a reason to call me and if so why? I got an email from someone claiming to be an agent, why would they have my email and since when does the IRS send out email? Read everything slowly and carefully. The majority of fake emails will look false if you take the time to read them from start to finish.

Use your accountant.  We are here to help you. When you receive a questionable phone call or email, call us. We will be able to tell you if it is a problem and advise you of the actions to take if needed. This will assure all inquiries are handled through legitimate sources and not the phone numbers or websites that they give you.

If you have received any phone calls or even letters in the mail that seem questionable feel free to give us a call. We will be happy to look over any documentation or discuss any requests that you might have received.  Remember, it is always better to be overly cautious when it comes to your personal information!
